Parameters of Necrotizing Entero Colitis Include Histopathology, Diagnosis, Differential Diagnosis, Treatment
Abstract
Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a potentially fatal disease that nearly exclusively affects newborns and has a 50% death rate. The pathophysiology of NEC is intestinal inflammation that leads to bacterial invasion, which causes cellular damage, death, and necrosis in both the colon and the intestine. As NEC progresses, intestinal perforation can cause sepsis and even death. Poor feeding, vomiting, lethargy, and abdominal discomfort are some of the non-specific signs and symptoms of NEC. This exercise highlights the importance of an interdisciplinary team approach to the care of affected individuals and provides information on the presentation, assessment, and treatment of necrotizing enterocolitis.
