Abstract

This study examined the influence of environmental variables and language of communication on academic performance in selected Colleges of Education in North-Central Nigeria. The multilingual and infrastructurally diverse nature of the region presents unique challenges that impact learning experiences. The aim was to determine the relationship between environmental factors, language use, and students’ academic outcomes. A total population of 300 respondents drawn from three purposively selected Colleges of Education participated in the study. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire, and analysis involved descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, and multiple regression. Findings revealed that overall environmental quality was moderate (x̄ = 3.21), with classroom lighting (x̄ = 3.58), library facilities (x̄ = 3.47), and cleanliness (x̄ = 3.62) rated highest. Environmental variables showed significant positive correlations with CGPA, with library facilities having the strongest relationship (r = .417, p < .01). Language of communication was also influential, with English proficiency (β = .286), code-switching (β = .147), and peer discussion in Pidgin (β = .139) significantly predicting academic performance. The combined model explained 43.3% of the variance in academic performance (R² = .433). The study concludes that academic performance is jointly shaped by physical learning conditions and linguistic competence.  It is therefore recommended that infrastructural upgrades, enhanced language support programmes, and structured multilingual instructional strategies will greatly enhance students’ learning and equally improve their academic performances.
