Yoga and Ayurveda for Mental Health Restoration: A Systematic Integrative Medicine Perspective
Abstract
Mental health disorders are among the most urgent global health issues, significantly contributing to morbidity, disability, and diminished quality of life. Despite advances in treatment, gaps remain due to resistance to therapies, side effects, and psychosocial obstacles. Yoga and Ayurveda—ancient Indian systems of self-regulation and holistic healing—provide multidimensional approaches that target physical, emotional, and spiritual balance. This manuscript reviews scientific evidence highlighting the role of yoga and Ayurveda as complementary and integrative strategies for maintaining and restoring mental health. Based on 2024–2025 PubMed studies, including large-scale systematic reviews and randomised controlled trials, the evidence demonstrates reductions in depression, anxiety, and stress, alongside improvements in neuroendocrine function, sleep, and overall quality of life. Mechanistically, these effects are mediated through hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis regulation, vagal tone enhancement, neurotransmitter balance, and anti-inflammatory actions. The combined application of yoga and Ayurvedic therapeutics offers a scientifically validated, culturally coherent pathway towards sustainable mental wellness.
