Cryptic Pregnancy: A Hidden Obstetric Phenomenon

Gayathri R.

Abstract

Cryptic pregnancy, also referred to as denied or stealth pregnancy, is a rare obstetric phenomenon in which a woman remains unaware of her pregnancy until late gestation or delivery. This condition presents unique diagnostic, psychological, and ethical challenges for healthcare professionals due to the absence of antenatal care and delayed recognition. This article reviews the epidemiology, etiological factors, clinical presentation, diagnostic considerations, maternal–fetal risks, and implications for nursing practice. Early identification and a multidisciplinary approach are essential to improve maternal and neonatal outcomes.
