An Analysis of Courtyards' Effects on the Environment and Structure in Hot and Humid Climates

Rakesh Mishra

Abstract

Courtyard buildings, which are increasingly important in the context of energy conservation, are designed to reduce energy usage and provide private, versatile spaces. This paper explores the historical, cultural, architectural, and structural roles of courtyards in the context of sustainable buildings, with a focus on hot and humid climates. Through a review of the literature, various design variants are examined to enhance the microclimatic and structural performance of courtyards, emphasizing passive cooling solutions. The findings suggest ways to improve courtyards' effectiveness, particularly in tropical climates.
