Abstract

Functional dyspepsia is a common benign gastrointestinal problem that can be challenging to diagnose because it presents similarly to other illnesses. Epigastric pain or burning, early satiety, and postprandial fullness are the symptoms of this illness; imaging or endoscopy does not reveal any structural abnormalities. More than 20% of people have functional dyspepsia, which is assessed using the symptom-based Rome IV Criteria. The pathophysiology of functional dyspepsia is complicated, despite the fact that its precise mechanism is not well understood. Each of the three forms of functional dyspepsia—epigastric pain syndrome, postprandial distress syndrome, and a mix of the two—is believed to be caused by a distinct mechanism. Traditionally, disruptions in both macroscopic and microscopic stomach physiological variables have been linked to functional dyspepsia. The patient is educated about the diagnosis and treatment expectations during first management. The primary treatment focuses on symptom management, as this disorder can be relapsing and remitting. Management primarily focuses on symptom relief along with treatment options including proton pump inhibitors, H2-receptor antagonists, prokinetic agents, and antidepressants. Patients should be tested and treated for Helicobacter pylori if applicable. Patients should be educated regarding their condition and treatment expectations. Endoscopic evaluation is essential if alarming symptoms namely weight loss, dysphagia, or vomiting are observed. The examination and treatment of functional dyspepsia are explained in this exercise, with a focus on the interprofessional healthcare team's critical role in managing this condition and improving patient care.
