Abstract

Visually impaired individuals often struggle to navigate safely due to their inability to detect obstacles and recognize objects in their surroundings. To improve independent mobility and reduce accident risks, this work proposes a Smart Assistive System using Raspberry Pi, ultrasonic sensing, and camera-based object detection. The ultrasonic sensor continuously measures the distance of nearby obstacles and alerts the user when an object enters a predefined range. Simultaneously, the processes the frames using computer vision algorithms to identify common obstacles such as people, vehicles, and doorways. The system delivers all detection outputs through a speaker using clear audio instructions, allowing hands-free operation. This integrated approach provides both near-range and long-range awareness, making it effective.
