Integration of HVAC Systems with Interior Design for Sustainable and Comfortable Living Spaces
Abstract
The increasing demand for sustainable buildings and healthier indoor environments has transformed the role of Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems from conventional mechanical services into integral components of architectural and interior design strategies. Modern occupants spend a significant portion of their lives indoors, making indoor environmental quality (IEQ), thermal comfort, air quality, and energy efficiency essential considerations in contemporary living spaces. Traditionally, HVAC systems and interior design were developed as separate disciplines, often resulting in conflicts between aesthetic objectives, spatial functionality, and mechanical performance. However, recent approaches emphasize interdisciplinary collaboration between architects, interior designers, and HVAC engineers to create environments that are both environmentally responsible and occupant-centric. This review paper explores the integration of HVAC systems with interior design for achieving sustainable and comfortable living spaces. The study examines the influence of spatial planning, building materials, furniture arrangement, ventilation strategies, smart control technologies, and energy-efficient HVAC solutions on indoor comfort and sustainability. The paper discusses how emerging technologies such as Internet of Things (IoT)-based sensors, artificial intelligence (AI)-driven control systems, and building automation platforms enable adaptive environmental management. Furthermore, the research highlights the importance of considering HVAC requirements during the early stages of interior design development to optimize energy performance, improve indoor air quality, and enhance user experience. The integration of HVAC systems with interior design represents a multidisciplinary approach where technology, environmental responsibility, and human-centered design converge. Future sustainable interiors will depend on intelligent HVAC solutions that respond dynamically to occupant needs while minimizing energy consumption and environmental impact.
