Case Study Analysis of Intelligent Lighting Systems in Contemporary Interior Spaces: A Review of Adaptive Technologies, Human-Centric Design, and Sustainable Applications

Jamila Rawat, Amit kumar Raval, Dr. Nidhi Gupta

Abstract

The rapid advancement of digital technologies, the Internet of Things (IoT), and artificial intelligence (AI) has transformed conventional lighting systems into intelligent, adaptive, and user-responsive environments. Intelligent lighting systems (ILS) have emerged as a significant component of contemporary interior design by integrating sensing technologies, automated control mechanisms, data analytics, and human-centric approaches to improve energy efficiency, occupant comfort, and spatial experience. Unlike traditional lighting solutions that primarily provide illumination, intelligent lighting systems dynamically respond to environmental conditions, user behaviour, and physiological requirements. This review investigates the application of intelligent lighting systems within contemporary interior spaces through a case study-based approach, examining their technological frameworks, design implications, sustainability benefits, and challenges. The study analyses applications in residential, workplace, hospitality, and healthcare environments, highlighting how adaptive lighting contributes to enhanced visual comfort, circadian regulation, energy conservation, and personalized user experiences. Recent research indicates that intelligent lighting integrated with occupancy sensors, daylight harvesting systems, and AI-driven automation can significantly reduce energy consumption while improving indoor environmental quality. However, challenges related to implementation costs, interoperability, privacy concerns, and user acceptance remain critical barriers. The paper concludes that intelligent lighting represents a transformative design strategy for future interiors, where lighting becomes an active environmental system rather than a passive architectural element. Future research directions emphasize AI-based predictive lighting models, digital twins, and personalized adaptive environments for sustainable and human-centred interior design.
