Role of Plastics in Engineering Applications and Its Effect on Sustainability

Akriti Gupta

Abstract

Plastics have become integral to modern engineering due to their versatility, lightweight properties, ease of manufacturing, and cost-effectiveness. From automotive components and electronics to packaging and medical devices, plastics are used across a multitude of industries. Despite these benefits, the environmental impact of plastics poses a significant challenge to sustainability. This paper explores the role of plastics in engineering applications, their material properties that make them ideal for various functions, and the ecological concerns associated with their widespread use. The study also examines advancements in sustainable alternatives such as bioplastics and recycling technologies and discusses strategies to minimize the environmental footprint of plastic usage in engineering.
