Desalination of Seawater through Adsorption of Magnesium and Sodium Ions Using Date Palm Trunk Fibers as Adsorbents

Haneef Ur Rehman, Granaz Baloch

Abstract

Water scarcity is becoming the major problem for many countries due to increase of population, unpredicted urbanization and industrialization as well as due to climate change. In current study various steps of experiment were performed to analyze the adsorption capability of date trunk fiber for the adsorption of Na and Mg ions in seawater.  The date trunk fiber adsorbed maximum Na and Mg ions on 100 µm fiber size. The pH significantly changed the percentage of adsorption of ions on date palm trunk fiber and maximum adsorption of Na and Mg ions were achieved on pH-7. The date palm trunk fibers adsorbed maximum ions by adjusting the stirrer on 250 rpm. The reaction time period for maximum adsorption of sodium and magnesium were observed after 15 minutes. The date trunk palm fiber also reduced the TDS value of seawater from 10000 ppm to 5000 ppm. The FTIR peak indicated that the date palm trunk fiber is complex in nature with the presence of C-O, C-H aliphatic and C-) groups and SEM showed the porous structure of date palm trunk fibers.
