MATLAB-Based Design and Analysis of a Three-Phase Inverter-Fed Induction Motor Using PWM

Abstract


This paper presents the design, modeling, and MATLAB/Simulink based analysis of a three-phase inverter driving a squirrel-cage induction motor using PWM switching techniques. The inverter architecture, PWM strategy (Sinusoidal PWM — SPWM and Space-Vector PWM — SVPWM), gating logic, filter design, and motor control are described. A Simulink model is developed to evaluate steady-state and transient performance: speed, torque, stator currents, voltage waveforms, total harmonic distortion (THD) and dynamic responses under load changes. Results show that proper selection of DC link voltage, switching frequency, and modulation index yields low current THD (< 6% with SVPWM at 5 kHz), good torque response, and expected steady-state speed with acceptable efficiency for industrial drives.
