Static vs Dynamic TDD Synchronization in 5G Networks: A Comparative Analysis and Performance Trade-offs of Cross-Link Interference Mitigation and Spectral Efficiency

Praise Igochi Onu, Kelechi Nworah

Abstract

Time Division Duplex (TDD) is an important aspect of 5G New Radio (NR) as it helps ensure that traffic patterns are not symmetrical and also optimizes spectrum usage. Synchronization between cells is still problematic due to the cross-link interference (CLI) caused by uplink and downlink misalignment, leading to reduced reliability and throughput. From this study, two approaches to synchronization comparisons are presented: Dynamic-TDD (D-TDD) which improves adaptability to traffic variations while increasing interference risks and coordination overhead, and Static-TDD (S-TDD) which is recommended for stability but limits flexibility. The study demonstrates that D-TDD can achieve significant spectral efficiency in dense or traffic-variable environments when combined with interference mitigation techniques, while S-TDD is well-suited for wide-area deployments that require robustness. In addition to identifying areas for future research that could be improved, such as designing using URLLC and synchronizing with AI, the study also highlights hybrid frameworks that offer both stability and flexibility.
