Abstract

Acne vulgaris is a common skin problem that mostly affects teenagers and young adults. It occurs due to factors like excess oil(sebum) production, bacterial growth(Propionibacterium acnes), hormonal imbalance, and blockage of skin pores. Many synthetic medicines such as antibiotics and chemical creams are available for acne treatment, but they often cause side effects like dryness, irritation, redness, and resistance to bacteria. Therefore, herbal formulations have gained popularity as safer and more effective alternatives for acne management.

The present study focuses on the preparation and formulation of a herbal gel for acne treatment using natural ingredients with proven antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. Medicinal plants like Neem(Azadirachta indica), Tulsi (Ocimum sanctum), Aloe vera, and Turmeric(Curcuma longa) were choosen for the formulation. The extracts were prepared and incorporated into a gel base containing Carbopol 940 as the gelling agent, glycerin as a moisturizer, and triethanolamine to adjust the pH. The gel showed smooth texture, good consistency, and a skin-friendly pH (around 5.5–6.5). It also exhibited good antibacterial activity and remained stable under normal storage conditions.

From the study, it can be concluded that the herbal gel prepared from Neem, Tulsi, Aloe vera, and Turmeric can be a safe, effective, and economical alternative to chemical-based acne treatments. It provides natural healing with minimal side effects and can be developed further for commercial use after clinical evaluation.
